Why Hasta exists
We are European patriots in the practical sense. We want more of the technology Europe relies on to be designed, owned, financed and built here.
Europe has the founders, engineers and industrial depth. What is often missing at the earliest stage is decisive capital joined by people who know how to build, can test the argument and can open the right doors. Hasta brings those pieces together.
Why the name Hasta
Hasta is Latin for spear. The name reflects the role we intend to play: at the tip of the spear of European innovation, where ambitious technology becomes real capability.
Members of Hasta are the Hastati. In the Roman manipular legion, the hastati formed the first battle line and were the first to engage. They acted in coordinated units supported by the lines behind them. For us, the name stands for early conviction, coordinated action and helping important technology move forward.
What Hasta backs
We back difficult, defensible technology with a credible path to European capability. Europe means the continent, including the EU, EEA, United Kingdom, Ukraine and the wider region.
Our mandate covers applied AI and core software; autonomy, robotics and sensing; advanced components and production; compute, networks and data infrastructure; and resilient infrastructure.
Some technologies do not fit neatly into a civilian or security category. Hasta backs core technology with commercial potential and, where relevant, strategic, dual-use or defence applications. Defence is within our mandate, but it does not define the whole mandate.
Europe is the company-building mandate, not a border around knowledge or capital. Investors, partner funds and experts may participate from anywhere.
How Hasta decides
- A committed team with technical credibility and ownership.
- Important technology solving a hard and consequential problem.
- A defensible advantage that can improve and compound.
- Evidence that customers need the capability.
- A credible European development, infrastructure or production path.
- A clear reason Hasta and its members can change the outcome.
How a deal works
- 01
Hasta leads
We source, question and assess the company, then form a view on the round and terms.
- 02
Members choose
Selected members receive the opportunity privately. Each decides independently whether to co-invest.
- 03
Capital is coordinated
Participating capital is pooled in one deal-specific special-purpose vehicle. The company receives one coordinated investment. In the best case, the process can move from first call to funding in a couple of weeks. Timing depends on diligence, checks, documents and transfers.
- 04
The group helps
Relevant members contribute knowledge, contacts and practical support before and after the money moves.
For founders
- One lead that can form and coordinate the round.
- Access to investors who understand early technical risk.
- Direct feedback on the technology, case, terms and build path.
- Relevant introductions across Europe and beyond.
- One vehicle on the cap table instead of many individual entries.
For members
- Carefully selected European technology opportunities.
- A clear decision on each company, with no blind-pool commitment.
- Shared diligence and perspective from people with relevant experience.
- A practical way to co-invest through one company-specific vehicle.
- A network where judgment, know-how and contacts matter alongside capital.
Beyond the deals
Hasta does more than invest. We bring founders, engineers, operators, investors and institutions together through focused gatherings around the technologies and capabilities Europe needs to own.
The aim is to build an ecosystem that shares knowledge, creates useful relationships and strengthens European technological independence.
Follow Hasta eventsWhy deal by deal
Members see the company before they commit. They choose one opportunity at a time, understand what they own and invest with a lead that has already formed a view.
The trade is clear. Capital must be assembled for every round, so the network must be screened, responsive and willing to do the work. Hasta accepts that discipline because transparency, choice and alignment are worth it.
Read the mechanismWho belongs
Hasta is deliberately selective. Members are admitted by introduction and screening. We look for sound judgment, relevant experience, curiosity and a willingness to help. Capital alone is not enough.
Founders should bring a hard problem, honest evidence and a real reason to build the capability in Europe. We prefer a clear technical argument to a polished performance.
